The Problems

I designed my own putters originally out of frustration with the putters on the market. I simply couldn’t find one I liked. Mostly I couldn’t find any I could consistently align properly. I found a couple through the years I could align well but had distance control issues with. Why did I have so much trouble with alignment, especially with the 2 ½ to 5 footers? And why did I have distance control problems with the few I could align properly? I finally realized the only putters I could align well were very visually simple putters and that most putters were very visually “busy”. The distance control was a weight issue as the putters I liked for alignment purposes were usually plain blade type putters and very lightweight with no heel toe weighting for forgiveness.

                           The Solutions

I decided to design putters that were visually easy to align and had no distracting features. There is an excellent article in the Jan. 2004 Golf Digest called the “Quiet Eye”. This article claims that a poor putter has trouble keeping his visual focus on the back of the ball at setup. Realize that at setup the back of the ball is also the front of the putter. I quickly came to realize that I was easily distracted by how visually “busy” the putter itself usually is. Not only do many putters have little or poor alignment aides but they often have an amazing array of distracting features. Odd shapes, logos, weights, cutouts, and more. All of these things distract the golfer from obtaining the “Quiet Eye”.

My first objective then was to eliminate these distractions. Any weight removal for heel/toe weighting must therefore be done from the bottom. When I had some prototypes made I immediately noticed that the ball starting rolling better than before off the putter face. I realized this was because I had inadvertently raised the center of mass of the putter head. Most putters have a very low center of mass just as all the other golf clubs do. Sometimes only a 3/8 of an inch off the turf! The center of mass of the ball is 0.83 inches off the turf! Many putter faces are barely that high!  This creates backspin! Now all the other golf clubs are supposed to create backspin when striking the ball. A putter is supposed to impart topspin as soon as possible. With the center of mass of the putter head close to the center of mass of the ball it is now possible to have a less lofted putter face. As you know most putters have loft, which also produces backspin. Most putters out there today are designed to produce backspin! The high center of mass combined with the decreased loft of  “Dead Straight” putters produces truer roll with almost no skid for more accurate putts. Now you’ll have fewer lip outs and more holed putts.

Benefits of the “Dead Straight” putters:

  1. Simplicity and high tech forgiveness. All “Dead Straight” putters are CAD designed and CNC machined for extreme accuracy and repeatability. All “Dead Straight” putters are also extremely easy to align and incredibly forgiving.
  2. Proper alignment is now easier than ever. The dark gray area on top of the putter is the same size as the diameter of a standard golf ball. This makes alignment extremely easy and with the centered white line allows you to chose the method that works best for you. Furthermore there is nothing to distract you from aligning the putt. I believe anything visible that does not aid in alignment distracts from it.
  3. Even the best golfers with the best equipment on occasion make a less than perfect stroke. At such times these putters are well designed to minimize the error introduced by the off center impact. With most of the mass of the putter head toward the heel and toe there is tremendous resistance to twisting helping to keep the putt on the intended line.
All of the “Dead Straight” mallet putters have the completely unique ability to allow the golfer to adjust the weight and balance to fit his or her putting stroke. You no longer have to look for a putter close enough to what you want that you’ll be able to live with it, you can have exactly the feel you want. I’m sure you’ve all noticed that on some days your putter feels just right and on other days it just doesn’t feel good no matter what. With these putters you can adjust it easily on any given day to what you feel it should be on that day.  You no longer have to deal with a putter that feels too heavy one day, just right the next, and then too light another day. It is quick and easy to adjust the weight of your “Dead Straight” mallet putters to what feels best whenever you want to.

                                    The Golf Test USA

Test results are in and once again the Dead Straight Golf “Middleweight” has shown itself to be a superior putter. In the latest round of tests, using 0 to 12 handicap golfers like you as the judges the Middleweight beat the best in head to head testing. As you know the best golfers consider distance control to be an even more important quality in a putter than accuracy. The Middleweight beat the Aserta Eclipse, the Aserta TRM, the Heavy Putter A3, the Never Compromise GZ1, the Titleist Futura, and many more in this test. In fact NO putter in the test, no putter, had a better score in distance control than the Dead Straight Golf Middleweight putter. In addition it beat the Aserta TRBC, the Scotty Cameron Red X, the Scotty Cameron Newport 2, the MacGregor Grace M5K-GT, the Titleist Futura, the Heavy Putter A3, the Aserta TRM, the Never Compromise GZ1, and many more in accuracy. How can a putter with both superior distance control and superb accuracy help your game? How can it not!
